Water Pressure Repairs
East London
Most of the water pressure repairs East London homes need start with a gauge at the meter. A weak shower can be a clogged strainer, a half-shut valve, a failing pressure valve or the city's supply, and only three of those are yours to pay for.

What we fix when the pressure is wrong
Too low, too high, or changing by the hour.
Low pressure at one tap or shower is usually local: a blocked aerator or shower head, a worn mixer cartridge, or an isolating valve left half closed. Low pressure everywhere points to the supply, the main stopcock, the meter or a leak on the line. Weak hot water only points to the geyser's pressure control valve or the strainer in front of it.
Pressure that is too high shows up as banging pipes when a tap closes, a geyser overflow that drips all day, and taps that spit. Buffalo City's by-law requires a geyser connected directly to the mains to have a pressure-reducing valve, and when that valve fails the geyser sees full mains pressure.
The repairs are parts you can see on an invoice: a pressure-reducing valve, a pressure control valve on the geyser, a stopcock, a section of pipe that has corroded inside, or a booster pump where the supply itself is weak.
Your low pressure may be the network, not your plumbing
How East London's trunk mains, reservoirs and outages show up at your taps.
In 2017 a burst on the trunk mains that feed East London from the Umzonyana treatment works, pipes reported to be more than 50 years old, caused outages and low pressure from Duncan Village and Buffalo Flats to Vincent, Beacon Bay and Gonubie, and the metro warned that pressure would be lower than normal while the system recovered. In January 2026 a leak on a 600 mm trunk main left Vincent Reservoir at critical levels, with Nahoon Valley Park, Dorchester Heights, Bonnie Doon, Nahoon, Vincent and Bunkers Hill affected.
Buffalo City itself says that in some areas demand is three times what the network was designed for. After the January 2022 floods it cut supply from 22h00 to 04h00 every night so that reservoirs serving high-lying areas could refill. If you live on higher ground, on the Berea side or up towards Vincent, your pressure depends on how full those reservoirs are, and it can change by the hour.
The metro also manages pressure on purpose: its water conservation plan includes installing and refurbishing pressure-reducing valves across the city to limit bursts. That protects the pipes in the street. It also means the pressure at your meter is partly a municipal decision, and no repair inside your property can raise it.
These events leave something behind in the water. Flood turbidity in January 2022 clogged the treatment works' filters, and fine sediment that reaches a house settles in the strainers of pressure valves, aerators and shower heads. A shower that went weak right after an outage often has a blocked strainer, not a pipe problem.
Before booking anyone, check the pressure at the garden tap nearest the meter. If that is weak too, and the neighbours say the same, it is the supply, and the call is to Buffalo City, not a plumber.

A gauge reading before a guess
Four rules for a problem that is often not yours to pay for.
Measured at the meter first
A pressure reading at the meter and at the fixtures shows whether the problem is the supply, the house, or one tap.
The cheapest cause checked first
Strainers, aerators and valves before pipes. Most weak showers are fixed without opening a wall.
Parts named on the quote
A valve by type, size and brand, not "pressure repairs" as a single line.
Told straight when it is not yours
If the reading at the meter is low, it is the supply. We say so, and the fix is a report to the metro, not a repair.
How a pressure repair works
Measure, find, fix, measure again.
- 1
Measure at the meter
A gauge on the nearest tap to the meter shows what the city is delivering.
- 2
Measure at the fixtures
Hot and cold, at the taps and showers that are weak, to find where the pressure is being lost.
- 3
Find the restriction
A strainer, a valve, a pressure regulator or a section of pipe, priced in writing.
- 4
Repair and re-measure
The part replaced and the readings taken again, so you can see the difference.
Water pressure questions
Including the ones that are really for the municipality.
How much do water pressure repairs cost?
It depends on the part. Cleaning a strainer is a short job; replacing a pressure-reducing valve or a section of pipe is a part plus labour, and national guides put plumbing labour at about R450 to R850 an hour. We price the repair in writing after measuring, so you are not paying for a guess.
Why is my water pressure low in the mornings and evenings?
That is when everyone uses water at once, and pressure on the network drops. If your pressure is fine at midday and weak at peak times, the cause is most likely the supply rather than your plumbing.
Why is only my hot water pressure low?
The hot water passes through the geyser's pressure control valve, which has a strainer that catches sediment. A clogged strainer, a failing valve or a partly closed isolating valve on the geyser line is the usual cause.
What is a pressure-reducing valve and do I need one?
It limits the pressure entering your plumbing to a safe level. Buffalo City's by-law requires one where a geyser is connected directly to the mains, and it protects taps, toilets and geysers from pressure surges, including the surge when water returns after an outage.
Will a booster pump fix low pressure?
Where the supply is weak but steady, a pump and tank can help. It cannot make water that is not there during an outage, and it is the last thing to try, not the first.
Why do my pipes bang when a tap closes?
That is water hammer: water moving fast and stopped suddenly. High pressure makes it worse, and loose pipe clips let the pipes knock. A pressure-reducing valve and proper clipping usually cure it.
Who do I report low city pressure to?
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, through its water and sanitation customer care channels. A pressure reading at the meter, with the date and time, makes the report hard to dismiss.
