Geyser Installation
East London
A geyser installation East London insurers will accept follows SANS 10254 and Buffalo City's water by-law, and ends with a certificate of compliance. That paperwork is what an assessor reads after the next burst.

What a geyser installation includes
More than the cylinder: the valves, the tray and the pipes around it.
A replacement geyser is the cylinder plus everything that keeps it safe: a pressure control valve matched to the geyser's rating, vacuum breakers on the hot and cold sides, a temperature and pressure relief valve, a drip tray with its own drain, and metal discharge pipes that end where the water can be seen outside. Anything missing from the old installation is put right when the new geyser goes in.
The geyser is sized to the household and the space: horizontal in a roof, or vertical in a cupboard or outside where there is no roof access. The old geyser is taken out of the roof and removed from the property, unless your insurer's assessor wants to see it.
If you are thinking about solar water heating later, say so before the geyser is chosen. The right cylinder now can save a second replacement: see solar geyser installation.
What Buffalo City's by‑law says about your geyser
The clauses an installation is judged on, and who is allowed to do the work.
Buffalo City's Water Services By-law has its own rules for geysers. Vacuum relief valves must be fitted to the inlet and outlet at least 300 mm above the highest water level in the geyser, and the water a geyser discharges as it expands must be led to a place where it can readily be seen. A geyser connected directly to the mains needs a pressure-reducing valve and stopcock approved by the municipality.
The by-law also decides who may do the work. Only a registered plumber, or a person working under one, may replace a geyser or its protective devices. It defines a registered plumber as one registered with the SAQCC for the water supply industry and approved by the municipality, and makes it an offence to hire anyone else for that work.
Nationally, every geyser replacement has to meet SANS 10252-1 and SANS 10254, and the Plumbing Industry Registration Board expects a Plumbing Certificate of Compliance on geyser work. One geyser manufacturer warns that an insurer is within its rights to reject a claim on a non-compliant installation. With geysers behind about 27% of South African home insurance claims, that paperwork is not a formality.
East London gives the pressure side of a geyser more to do than most cities. The supply empties and refills whenever a trunk main bursts or leaks, as it did in August 2025 and January 2026, and the surge when the water returns is exactly what the pressure-reducing valve and vacuum breakers are there to absorb. A geyser fitted without them is relying on luck.
Before you sign off a new geyser, ask for the certificate of compliance and look outside for the discharge pipe. If you cannot see where the geyser drains, neither can an assessor.
Fitted to the by‑law, then certified
Four things that decide whether a new geyser passes an insurer's check.
Fitted to the clause, not to habit
Vacuum breakers at the right height, a discharge pipe you can see, a pressure-reducing valve where the geyser is on the mains: the by-law's list, done.
Sized to your house
We ask how many people shower at the same time, not just how many live there, and explain the size on the quote.
The old geyser removed
Out of the roof and off the property, unless your insurer's assessor wants it kept.
A certificate on completion
The certificate of compliance for the installation, with photographs of the finished work, for your records and your insurer.
How a geyser installation works
Looked at first, quoted in writing, fitted and certified.
- 1
Look first
We look at the space, the access and what is already there: valves, tray, pipework and the electrical supply.
- 2
Written quote
The geyser size and options, every valve and part that needs replacing, and anything that has to be opened and made good.
- 3
Install
Drain and remove the old geyser, fit the new one with its valves, tray and discharge pipes, and connect it.
- 4
Test and certify
Fill, check for leaks, heat to temperature, then hand over the certificate and photographs.
Geyser installation questions
Cost first, then the questions an insurer will ask.
How much does a geyser installation cost in East London?
Published East London figures put geyser installation labour at about R2,500 to R2,900, and Kandua's 2026 national guide puts a new 150-litre geyser at R5,000 to R10,000 for the unit alone. Valves, the drip tray and any pipework that needs replacing come on top, which is why we quote after seeing the roof space.
What size geyser do I need?
Size follows the busiest hour of the day, not the number of bedrooms. Tell us who showers when, and the quote states the size and the reason, so you can compare like with like.
Horizontal or vertical?
Whichever fits the space and can be reached for maintenance, with a drip tray that drains properly. Most roof spaces take a horizontal geyser; a cupboard or an outside wall usually takes a vertical one.
Does a new geyser need a certificate of compliance?
Yes. The Plumbing Industry Registration Board expects a Plumbing Certificate of Compliance on geyser installations, and an insurer can reject a later claim on a non-compliant one. Keep it with your house papers; a buyer's conveyancer may ask for it.
What happens to my old geyser?
We drain it, take it out of the roof and remove it from the property. If it is an insurance claim and the assessor wants to see it, we leave it on site.
Can you add a geyser timer or move the geyser?
Both can be part of the quote. Moving a geyser means new pipework and a new place for the tray and discharge pipes to drain, so it is priced as its own line.
Should I switch to solar or a heat pump instead?
It is worth asking before a replacement rather than after. A solar system or heat pump can be added to a new geyser later, but some cylinders suit that better than others. See solar geyser installation or ask on the form.

There is no phone line on this website on purpose: every request lands with a person who phones you back, so nothing depends on catching someone between jobs.
