Gas Geyser Installation
East London

Before any gas geyser installation, East London homes get a water pressure check from us: an instantaneous heater only lights when enough water flows through it. Then the cylinders, gas line and heater go in and are signed off with a certificate of conformity.

What goes into a gas geyser installation

Two halves: the gas side and the water side.

An instantaneous gas geyser heats water only while a hot tap is open. Water flowing through it trips a sensor, the burner lights, and it goes out when the tap closes. There is no tank to heat and nothing to keep warm.

The gas side is the cylinders, a regulator, the gas line and the heater, mounted where its fumes can get out: outside, or inside with a proper flue. The water side is the cold supply in and the hot pipes to the house, often joined to the pipework of the old electric geyser.

By law, only a person registered with SAQCC Gas as an authorised person may install a gas appliance or system, and a certificate of conformity has to be issued once the installation is complete. Ask to see both.

A gas geyser needs water pressure as much as gas

Why East London's outages and low-pressure days matter for an instantaneous heater.

An instantaneous gas geyser lights only when enough water flows through it to trip its flow sensor. Below that, the burner stays off and the shower runs cold. Each model has its own minimum, so the heater has to be chosen for the pressure your house actually gets, not the pressure it gets on a good day.

In East London, that pressure changes. When the trunk mains from Umzonyana burst in 2017, the metro warned that pressure would stay lower than normal while the system recovered. Since then a burst in August 2025 and a trunk-main leak in January 2026 have left reservoirs serving Vincent, Nahoon Valley, Dorchester Heights, Beacon Bay and Gonubie low. The metro itself says demand in some areas is three times what the network was designed for. Houses on high ground feel it first.

So we measure before we fit. A pressure reading at the house shows whether a low-pressure model is needed, whether a booster pump makes sense, or whether the real problem is a half-closed valve or a clogged strainer that a pressure repair would fix for less.

The coast adds one more thing. Regulators, fittings and outdoor units within a kilometre of the sea sit in air the national corrosion map rates as high to extremely corrosive, so where the heater and cylinders stand, and what shelters them, is part of the quote.

If your water pressure drops in the evenings or after outages, say so on the form. It changes which gas geyser we recommend.

Measured first, installed by the right person

Gas is safe when the right person installs it in the right place.

  • Pressure measured before a model is chosen

A heater that cannot light on your evening pressure is the wrong heater, however good the brand.

  • The gas side by an authorised person

Gas installation done by an SAQCC Gas authorised person, as the regulations require, and the water side to the plumbing rules.

  • Placed for safety and the weather

Outside or properly flued, away from windows and drains, and sheltered from the salt air where the house is near the sea.

  • A certificate of conformity

Issued when the installation is complete, with the gas line leak-tested in front of you.

How a gas geyser installation works

Measured, quoted, installed, tested.

  1. 1

    Pressure and site check

Water pressure at the house, where the heater and cylinders can go, and how the pipes will run.

  2. 2

    Written quote

The heater model and why, the cylinders and regulator, the gas line, and any pump or pipework, each listed.

  3. 3

    Install both sides

Mount the heater and flue, run the gas line from the cylinders, and connect the water in and out.

  4. 4

    Test, light and certify

Leak-test the gas line, run every hot tap, check the flame and the temperature, and issue the certificate.

Gas geyser questions

Safety, pressure and the certificate.

How much does a gas geyser installation cost in East London?

It depends on the heater's size, how far the gas line runs from the cylinders, and whether the water side needs a pump or new pipework. We give a written quote with each of those listed after a site visit, so you can compare it line by line.

Is a gas geyser safe?

Installed correctly, with the heater outside or properly flued and the gas line leak-tested, yes. That is why the regulations allow only a registered authorised person to install a gas appliance or system.

Will a gas geyser work with low water pressure?

Only if the model suits it. Each instantaneous heater needs a minimum flow to light. We measure your pressure first and choose a low-pressure model, or suggest a pump, if the reading calls for it.

Do I need a certificate of conformity?

Yes. A certificate of conformity has to be issued after a gas installation is completed or changed, and also when a property changes hands. Keep it with your house papers.

Where can the gas cylinders go?

Outside, on a firm level base, away from drains, windows and anything that sparks, and where the supplier can swap them easily. We mark the spot on the quote.

Can I keep my electric geyser as well?

Yes. Some households run the gas heater for showers and keep the electric geyser for the rest, or switch it off and keep it as a backup. We plan the pipework around what you want.
