What a plumber costs in East London

Call-out and labour, from the guides that publish East London figures.

Three price guides publish figures for East London, and Kandua publishes national ones. They do not agree to the rand, which is normal: the range is the honest answer. A call-out fee covers getting a plumber to you and finding the problem; labour is charged once the work starts.

Published plumbing rates, East London and national, accessed October 2026
GuideCall-outLabour per hourAfter hours
Plumber Finder, East LondonR250 to R490R340 to R660R670 to R1,290 call-out
Snupit, East LondonNot statedUp to R400R550 to R1,100 call-out; about 50% more after hours

Kandua, nationalR450 to R750R450 to R850Higher; varies by plumber

Ask whether the call-out fee is deducted if the work goes ahead; practice varies from plumber to plumber. Ours, and whether it is deducted, is on the call back.

What common jobs cost

The jobs people search for most, with what moves the price up or down.

Most of these figures are national, because no guide publishes East London job prices for all of them. Where an East London figure exists, it is marked.

What Buffalo City charges

The metro's own fees, from its 2025/26 tariff book.

These are the only plumbing-related prices published specifically for East London by an official source. They are worth knowing before you ask the municipality to do something a plumber could.

Buffalo City Tariff Book 2025/26, VAT included
ItemCharge
Leak inspection at the owner's request, per visitR2,658.51
Call-out to a fault on the owner's internal plumbingR2,658.51
Clearing a blocked combined (shared) drain, per propertyR1,581.85
Clearing a blockage on a section serving one property, minimumR3,161.69
Domestic water, first 6 klR29.86 per kl
Domestic water, above 30 klR68.78 per kl

The tariff book carries a draft watermark, so check the current figures with Buffalo City. The water tariff is why a hidden leak costs more than the water it wastes: it pushes the month into the top block. See leak detection for the rebate on proven hidden leaks.

How to avoid paying twice

Four ways a fair price turns into an expensive job.

A call-out for the wrong equipment. Describe the job properly when you book, so a drain machine, a camera or a leak detector arrives on the first visit.

A quote that changes on the invoice. Ask for the price in writing before work starts, and for any change to be agreed before it is done.

Replacing what could be repaired. Ask why on the quote. A geyser with a sound tank usually needs a part, not a new cylinder.

Clearing the same drain again. If a drain blocks twice, a camera inspection costs about as much as another rodding and shows why it keeps happening.

Plumbing price questions

The ones people ask before agreeing to anything.

Is the call-out fee deducted from the repair?

Practice varies between plumbers, so ask before booking. We tell you on the call back what our call-out fee is and whether it comes off the repair.

Why do plumbers charge a call-out fee?

It covers the trip, the time on site and the diagnosis, whether or not you go ahead with the repair. A call-out that ends with the cause found and a written price has done its job, even if you decide to wait.

Are after-hours rates higher?

Yes. Published East London guides put after-hours and weekend call-outs at roughly R550 to R1,290, against about R250 to R490 in working hours.

Why will a plumber not give me a price over the phone?

For a known job, like replacing a tap or fitting a timer, a price over the phone is reasonable. For a fault, the price depends on the cause, and a phone quote for an unknown cause is a guess that usually changes on the day.

What does a burst geyser cost if I claim on insurance?

You pay the excess on your policy, and the insurer pays the rest of an approved claim up to the limits in your policy. Water damage makes up about 60% of home insurance claims in South Africa, with geysers about 27%, so insurers check the paperwork: see geyser installation.

Do your prices include VAT?

Every quote states whether VAT is included, on the first line, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Tell us what is happening and where. We phone you back to confirm a time and what we are bringing.

There is no phone line on this website on purpose: every request lands with a person who phones you back, so nothing depends on catching someone between jobs.
